On Tap for 2012

I wouldn’t say that my year has started out with a bang. I hope that it will get better ASAP. It’s not that there have been a lot of bad things that have happened, it’s just that the bad things are big.

But! I have 3(!!) non-fiction book ideas to work on and 2 fiction book ideas. I am coming to a point in my life where the ideas are bubbling over so much that I almost can’t NOT write.

The thing that has kept me from starting these projects is my perfectionist streak. I can’t control things in my life, but I have total control over my writing. Unfortunately, I want it to come out absolutely perfectly the first time. I don’t think it actually will, so I never start typing.

Also, I clutter up my time. I write letters, I read, I crochet, I knit. Somewhere in there I have to work, theoretically. I’m not making the time for writing. Maybe this is the year I will unclutter my time and do that.

What this Writer is up to

There’s not a lot of new content appearing here at my writing blog right now. It’s not because I’m not writing anything. Far from it! Right now, I am working on submitting my work to various audiences and markets. I have two pieces that I plan to submit to Chicken Soup for the Soul. I will be submitting a very short(100 word) love letter to a contest. Also, my local NPR station has called for submissions from female essayists. It’s not a paying market, but I plan to submit to it for the recognition.

I am most excited about submitting to my favorite magazine (The Sun! Read it if you never have–it’s excellent!). The magazine has a section where they publish reader essays on selected topics. Again, not a paying market, but it is one of my dreams/goals to be published in The Sun. My plan is to start small and then work up to an essay, a piece of short fiction, or a poem.

Stay tuned for updates about the results of my submissions. It’s really an exciting time for me as a writer. Of course, I say that now while I am in the upbeat submitting part and not after rejections!

An Introduction

I’ve been a writer for a long time. I’ve written poetry, journals, short stories, personal essays, and even started a novel or two.  I’ve been in workshop classes, and I’ve had writing “partners.” We didn’t write together, but critiqued one another. It was awesome to have a reason that you absolutely had to have something written every week. I am not a disciplined writer, and while I write every day, it’s not on the same piece or even on some sort of organized writing most of the time.

One of my writing partners really helped bring it home to me that while I produce, I’m not finishing things. She encouraged me to set goals for myself as a writer and work toward them. I had to think about what those goals really were first.

Here are some of them:

  • Finish all the projects I start.
  • Get a personal essay published.
  • Make some money writing.
  • Finish a novel.
  • Get some poetry published.

And so forth. I have made a tiny bit of money writing this year, and it’s been absolutely thrilling! I accidentally stumbled upon the job by sitting down next to the right person at BlogHer this past summer. I am moderating a book club at one of AOL’s blogs. I love it.

I’ve submitted a couple of pieces in other places, and have multiple projects going. This is my place for showcasing my work–mostly the things that I consider my best work, but perhaps some things I’m working on as well. I welcome comments, maybe even beg for them!
